Wax or Ceramic Coating? What to Ask Before Booking Boat Detailing
When comparing boat detailing proposals, start with the condition of the surface and the preparation included. A label such as “wax” or “ceramic coating” does not describe the whole job.
Ask for a condition assessment
Identify the surfaces to be treated and discuss oxidation, staining, previous coatings, repairs, and access. Gelcoat, painted surfaces, metals, glass, and teak should each have a suitable care plan. Ask the detailer to explain what can reasonably be improved and what requires a separate repair.
Understand the preparation
Cleaning, decontamination, polishing, and corrective work can change the scope substantially. A coating proposal should identify the preparation required for the selected product. Compare what is included rather than comparing price per foot alone.
Identify the product and aftercare
Request the proposed wax or coating system, the surfaces it is intended for, and the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. Discuss application conditions, return-to-use timing, recommended wash products, and any inspection or maintenance requirements attached to a warranty. Product claims should be supported by the manufacturer’s current documentation.
Keep teak work separate and clearly scoped
If your teak needs attention, ask whether the proposal covers cleaning, refinishing, seam work, or repairs. Deck condition and remaining material affect the available options. Agree on the scope before authorizing sanding or restoration.
Plan ongoing care
Discuss how the boat is used and where it is kept. A practical follow-up plan should explain washing frequency, who will inspect the finish, how developing issues will be reported, and what future work is separately chargeable.
SOS provides washdowns, polishing, waxing, ceramic coating, and teak deck refinishing and repair. We quote corrective and protective work around vessel condition, access, and the agreed finish requirements.
From skiffs to larger yachts, owners can request an individual service without a management agreement. Send your vessel’s length, location, and a description of the work for a tailored quote.
