Planning a Yacht Yard Period: A Practical Owner Checklist

A productive yard period begins before the boat is hauled out. A clear scope, realistic schedule, and approval process help owners and captains keep control of work as new findings arise.

Build one work list

Combine scheduled maintenance, observed defects, upgrades, and survey-related work into a single list. Separate essential work from optional improvements. Include photographs, service records, and any relevant manufacturer or surveyor instructions so contractors can understand the request.

Compare complete estimates

A headline price rarely tells the whole story. Check preparation, labor, materials, access, disposal, yard charges, and exclusions. For bottom painting, define the proposed coating system, preparation, running-gear treatment, and inspection points. Confirm compatibility and application requirements with the coating manufacturer and responsible contractor.

Agree how changes will be approved

Yard work can uncover additional issues. Establish who may authorize spending, what requires an owner’s approval, and how revised costs will be documented. Keep approved changes in the same project record as the original scope.

Coordinate the sequence

Some tasks depend on earlier work or need protected access. Discuss sequencing, drying or curing requirements, parts availability, contractor access, and the launch window with the yard. Build the schedule around the actual work rather than assuming every trade can work at once.

Track progress and closeout

Regular photographs and short updates should show completed work, outstanding tasks, budget changes, and decisions required. Before closeout, gather invoices, product information, service records, and warranty documents. Agree how final checks, launch arrangements, and any follow-up work will be handled.
