What Does Yacht Management Include? A Guide for South Florida Owners

Boat and yacht ownership brings a steady stream of decisions: what needs servicing, who should do the work, when the boat is available, and how much to budget. A management arrangement gives those tasks a defined owner and a repeatable process.

Start with the vessel and its use

A 20-foot skiff, an owner-operated motor yacht, and a crewed superyacht need different support. A smaller boat may need recurring cleaning and periodic condition checks. A larger yacht may need maintenance planning, contractor coordination, project oversight, and financial reporting. The right scope follows the vessel’s systems, use, location, and existing crew.

What an ongoing program can cover

A useful management proposal identifies visit frequency, the checks to be performed, the reporting you receive, and the process for approving additional work. Typical responsibilities include a maintenance calendar, photographs of findings, service-record organization, estimate collection, vendor scheduling, and tracking work to completion.

Look for concrete deliverables. A report should make it easy to understand what was checked, what changed, what needs attention, who is responsible, and which decisions require your approval.

Management and maintenance are separate questions

A management fee pays for the responsibilities listed in the agreement. Cleaning, repairs, materials, outside specialists, captain services, and major projects may be billed separately. Ask for a written explanation of inclusions, exclusions, spending authority, and any coordination fees before comparing proposals.

What if you already have a captain?

Shore-based support can complement an onboard team. A captain may benefit from help organizing yard work, comparing estimates, arranging local service, and preparing owner reports. Responsibilities should be agreed so communication stays clear and the captain retains onboard command.

Choose the support you need

You do not need a management agreement to arrange a washdown, teak deck repair, bottom painting, or another individual service. Start with the current need, then decide whether scheduled support would be useful.
